Hekab Be Logo Contest

The artwork from the first prize winners. One of these will be used to create a new logo for HB!

Although Hekab Be has had a logo for some time (the Mayan glyph symbol for zero), in honor of our new non-profit organization, we wanted to create a new logo that incorporated the art work of the children who use the library most. Debby Oakley helped organize the contest and put together a small fund-raiser to pay for the art supplies and a small amount of prize money for the winners.

Some of the logo contest entries

First place winner among the middle school kids, Jesse, age 13

We had a total of 8 entries, 4 from middle school children, and 4 from elementary school children. Of those 8, our wonderful judges selected a first and second place prize for each age group. We will be sending the first place logos to a graphic artist for touch-up to determine which one best works in a digitized format.

Logo contest judges from left to right: Richard Mazzola (local artist), Nancy Fischer (School principal and Tankah resident), & Emilia May (Akumal parent, former library employee & current Montessori teacher).

Second place winner for the elementary school group, Brandon, age 7

In memory of a library friend

Tom DeSalvo - who passed away in January 2009. Tom was a long time Akumal visitor and dedicated donor to Hekab Be Biblioteca. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife Ann (pictured below with their Grand-daughter Mary Kate) and his family.
