Long time library supporters, Debby and Bruce Oakley, have put up a $2000 U.S. challenge grant to help raise much needed funds for Hekab Be.

For every dollar donated to Hekab Be between January 1- February 28, 2009, the Oakleys will match dollar-for-dollar up to $2000. If we are successful in meeting this generous offer, we will have over two and half month’s worth of operating expense funds, putting us in good stead for a prosperous New Year!

A few words from Debby about why they support Hekab Be:

"Please help support Hekab Be Biblioteca de Akumal, a little local library that serves the families living in Akumal Pueblo AND visitors, both children and adults. We will match your donation, up to a total of $2,000, because we know that it takes alot of workers to make our lives pleasant here in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Inspired by the idea that 'giving a fishing line' is the best way to help, we want the library to be able to build literacy for women, men, children; we want the library to help build community through workshops, art, fairs, celebrations; we want the library to help build skills through employing and training local workers. Library staff and users raise about 80% of their own expenses. Please help keep the programs going by giving $10, $25, $100 or whatever you can! Remember, your donation will be doubled until a total of $2,000 is reached."

To make a donation to help us meet the Oakley's challenge, go to our donation site:

Remember your donation is tax-deductible!

Be sure to write in “challenge grant” on your check memo or paypal form so that your donation gets counted twice!

About the Oakleys:
The Oakleys, who own a home in Tankah, have been involved with the library for over ten years, providing on-going support. This challenge grant is just the latest in a long series of ideas and resources that Debby & Bruce have brought to Hekab Be.

In April, 2008,
the Oakleys helped organize the inauguration of a new library collection: the Fred Groves Memorial Collection. HB is very proud of having the honor to house this collection. Fred Groves was a long time resident of Tankah and through the generosity of his widow and the assistance of Debby & Bruce, the library now has a fine collection of books on alternative energy sources.

Debby has been a library supporter since she first met Brenda Detering, the library's founder, over 10 years ago. She & Bruce have consistently been a beacon of light for all of us at Hekab Be as we struggle to keep things running. Thanks Debby & Bruce!!!
